Metal or titanium braces are the most common and effective form of orthodontic treatment. With reasonable costs, braces are suitable for all ages and are not as selective as other cosmetic orthodontic methods. We can see children wearing braces at school, university students, and even office workers.
What about metal braces?
What are metal braces?
Metal braces are considered a traditional orthodontic method. The alloy materials used are nickel and titanium (non-rusting, compatible with the oral environment) designed to correct misaligned teeth. The treatment range covers most cases of underbite, overbite, gaps, and crooked teeth, from mild to severe.
When should you get metal braces?
- Crooked teeth: This is a condition where teeth grow in the wrong position, horizontally or vertically relative to the jawbone. Overlapping or twisted teeth cause a misaligned bite and deformation. The cause of crooked teeth is due to misaligned bone formation or lack of space for straight eruption from the time permanent teeth begin to grow.
- Overbite (protruding teeth): This is a type of malocclusion that causes a discrepancy in the ratio between the upper and lower jaws. The consequence is that the upper jaw protrudes more than the lower jaw, even affecting the aesthetics of the lips. The main causes of this condition are a jawbone that is too narrow; overbite due to bone structure…
- Underbite (reverse bite): This is a condition where the lower jaw develops too much compared to the upper jaw, protruding excessively, while the upper jaw is too short and recessed. A reverse bite causes facial asymmetry and negatively impacts jaw movement. The causes of an overbite can be related to both the teeth and the jawbone; in severe cases, braces may not be able to correct the problem.
- Gapped teeth: This refers to teeth in the same jaw growing far apart, unevenly, or with gaps between them. Patients with gapped teeth often experience difficulties with oral hygiene and chewing because food easily gets trapped in the gaps. Causes can include subjective factors, missing teeth, small tooth size, etc.
- Malocclusion: Malocclusion is a condition where the upper and lower teeth are misaligned, or the upper and lower jaws do not fit together properly. It has several names such as: open bite, deep bite, midline deviation, etc., affecting facial aesthetics and causing difficulties in chewing and speaking.
Advantages of metal braces?
- Effectiveness: Considered one of the most effective orthodontic methods due to its strong pulling power and stable force.
- Time: Faster treatment time, especially for cases requiring tooth extraction, compared to other options. On average, the treatment time for metal braces is 1-1.5 years, with difficult cases taking 2-3 years.
- Cost: Cost-effective, with prices suitable for all ages, including students. The earlier you start treatment, the cheaper the cost of metal braces.
Disadvantages of titanium braces:
- Aesthetics: Significantly inferior to some more modern methods such as ceramic braces, crystal braces, and clear aligners.
- Sensitiveness: More uncomfortable than using clear aligners.
- Contraindications: Not suitable for individuals allergic to the metal components of the braces.
Who should use metal braces?
Children undergoing growth orthodontics (pre-orthodontics): Braces for the four front teeth (two jaws or one jaw) in cases where children only have misalignment in the front teeth due to bad habits, improper tooth extraction, etc.
The ideal age for braces: Ages 9 to 14 are considered the most suitable age for metal braces, as the bone structure is still developing. Braces can handle most difficult cases, even severe overbites and underbites, without the need for invasive procedures (tooth extraction, surgery).
Adults: When the jawbone is fully developed and bone density is high, braces with strong traction force offer a significant advantage in terms of treatment time compared to cosmetic methods. However, for adults, the percentage requiring tooth extraction is quite high (approximately 60% – according to data from the Asian Dental and Maxillofacial Society).
Classification of Metal Braces
Conventional Metal Braces
This is the foundational method of modern orthodontics and is still widely used today. It uses fixed brackets on the teeth, with archwires running along the bracket grooves and secured to the bracket grooves by using dental elastics. The elasticity of the elastics supports the continuous and stable tooth straightening process, thus achieving the desired results. This method is highly dependent on the skill and experience of the dentist, the treatment plan, and the frequency of follow-up visits by the patient.
Self-ligating metal braces
Essentially, these are self-locking braces that don’t require elastic bands to tighten. This is an improved method designed to minimize the frequency of dental check-ups for patients (approximately every two months). The pulling force of this type is also more consistent and durable.
The process of metal bracket orthodontic treatment at Viet-Belgium Dental Clinic:
– Step 1: Schedule an appointment via hotline/fanpage or directly at Viet-Belgium’s branches;
– Step 2: General external examination + X-ray for detailed consultation and basic treatment plan;
– Step 3: Create a detailed treatment plan and time for the patient, recorded in the Orthodontic Commitment Agreement;
– Step 4: Clean and polish teeth, check enamel, place separators (if needed) before attaching brackets;
– Step 5: Attach brackets & archwires along with other supporting methods (interproximal reduction, tooth extraction, screw placement, etc.);
– Step 6: Regular follow-up appointments as directed by the doctor. The dental clinic will have a team of receptionists call to remind customers of their appointments one day before the scheduled date;
– Step 7: Remove brackets. The dental clinic will only remove brackets when the customer is satisfied with the results and signs the commitment to remove the braces;
– Step 8: Maintain good care and don’t forget to visit the dentist for regular check-ups after removing your braces.
