Lingual braces

Lingual braces (braces placed on the inner surface of the teeth) help us feel more confident in social interactions because the system is fixed to the inner surface of the teeth. Due to this unique configuration, more and more customers are interested in and researching this orthodontic device. However, not every case is suitable for this method. Let’s explore the details in the article below!

What are lingual braces?

Lingual braces, also known as inner braces, have a similar structure to traditional braces, but the orthodontic appliances are attached to the inner surface of the teeth. Hiding the brackets enhances aesthetics, allowing patients to feel more confident and comfortable in social interactions.

Advantages of lingual braces

• Aesthetic appeal is a key factor: Traditional braces often lack aesthetic appeal. Wearing brackets and wires can make patients feel self-conscious due to the visible metal framework on their teeth. With lingual braces, the brackets are placed inside the teeth, hidden from view, leading to greater confidence and comfort. At first glance, it’s virtually impossible to tell that the patient is wearing braces.

• Effective orthodontic treatment is guaranteed: Lingual braces, or braces on the inner surface of the teeth, work by applying force to the teeth using a system of orthodontic appliances. The force is applied evenly, resulting in outcomes comparable to traditional braces. The force from the archwire gradually moves the teeth to their correct positions on the dental arch, correcting dental and bite defects.

Limitations of lingual braces

• Difficult to clean teeth: Even traditional braces are difficult to clean because food easily gets trapped in the brackets. With lingual braces, the brackets are on the inner surface of the teeth, making cleaning even harder. You’ll have to spend a lot of time and be very meticulous to clean food particles stuck around the brackets, between the teeth, and on the archwire. This can be inconvenient in your daily life.
• Discomfort, awkwardness, and difficulty with oral hygiene: Metal brackets are attached to the inside of the teeth, making them prone to contact with the tongue, causing discomfort and awkwardness for the wearer.
• High cost: Because lingual braces require a separate bracket system and highly skilled dentists, the cost is usually double that of traditional metal and ceramic braces.

Cases where lingual braces are not recommended

• Severe dental misalignment: Severe overbite, severe underbite, and crossbite cases requiring tooth extraction and screw placement.
• Individuals with weak jawbones that cannot withstand the tightening force of braces.
• Individuals with crowns or dentures, making braces prone to loosening or falling out.
• Individuals with certain medical conditions such as: Prone to mouth ulcers, diabetes, and blood disorders are also not suitable for this method.

The process of lingual braces treatment at Viet Bi Dental Clinic

• Appointment and Consultation: First, the dentists will conduct a general examination and take X-rays of your jaw (completely free). This helps to accurately determine the extent of any defects or oral health problems you may have.
• Treatment Plan: Clearly outline the treatment options and agree with the patient on the lingual braces treatment plan and any supporting methods if necessary.
• Lingual Braces Attachment: The braces will be attached using the correct technique, angle, and spacing by the dentist in charge of your orthodontic treatment.
• Regular Follow-up: Depending on the misalignment of your teeth and each stage of treatment, the dentist will schedule specific follow-up appointments (usually once a month).
• Braces Removal: Our dentists will only remove the lingual braces when the patient is satisfied and agrees to the removal commitment.
• Maintenance: Each patient will receive a free clear retainer from Viet Bi for convenient wear even at work and school. Don’t forget to return to the dentist for a check-up every 3-6 months.
